The service

Hedge trimming, done for the hedge as well as the look

Hedge trimming means cutting the sides and top back to a clean, agreed line, keeping the hedge slightly wider at the base than at the top so sunlight reaches the lower foliage, and reducing the height or width when it has got away. It finishes with the clippings raked out of the base, chipped or carted, and the paths and lawn left clean.

That is different from a quick run along the face with a hedge trimmer. A hedge is a row of shrubs, sometimes small trees, being held at a size they would happily outgrow. Cut it the wrong way and it goes bare at the bottom, browns off where the leaves are sliced, or lets disease into fresh cuts at the worst time of year. Most of the skill is in the shape, the timing, and how much growth comes off without damaging the branch structure underneath.

Auckland's everyday hedges are griselinia, pittosporum, photinia (red robin), buxus, camellia, lilly pilly, viburnum and coprosma, along with older cypress and leylandii screens. Each has its own calendar, and a couple have disease rules attached, so it is worth knowing when to trim each type of hedge before booking anyone, including us.

Hedge trimming in Auckland — the essentials

  • Typical cost: $150–$350 for a low, regularly kept hedge; $300–$700 for a standard 1.5–3m boundary hedge; $700–$2,000+ for tall or long runs. Typical Auckland ranges incl. GST, not quotes.
  • How often: most Auckland hedges need two or three trims a year; fast growers more.
  • Best timing: a main shaping trim in late winter for most foliage hedges, light tidies after the spring flush and in late summer, flowering hedges straight after they flower, and lilly pilly and other myrtles only in late autumn to early winter (myrtle rust).
  • Consent: not needed for an ordinary garden hedge; check first if the property sits in a protected overlay or the title carries a planting covenant.
  • Included: trimming, shaping, clippings chipped or carted away, paths and lawns cleaned up.

Situations we handle

The hedge jobs we're called to most

Regular maintenance trims

Front and boundary hedges kept to a set height and width on a schedule. Because each visit only takes off one season's growth, the work is quick, the green waste is light and the price per visit stays at the bottom of the range. It is also what keeps a hedge dense to the ground.

Tall hedges and screens

Privacy hedges of 3m and more, worked from ladders, a tripod ladder or an elevated work platform depending on the height and the ground beneath. Tops are cut level to a line rather than by eye, and the equipment is set up so nobody is overreaching from a ladder on soft soil.

Overgrown hedges brought back down

Height reduction and width reduction for a hedge that has been left for years, often staged over two seasons so it recovers instead of dying back. Will it grow back? Most healthy broadleaf hedges reshoot from older wood; most conifers, including cypress and leylandii, do not regrow from brown wood, so they are only cut back within the green.

Formal and buxus hedges

Low box edging, parterres and clipped shapes kept crisp with several light trims a year. Buxus is cut in dry weather with cleaned blades, because box blight spreads by water splash and travels on tools. A bit of simple topiary is fine; elaborate sculpture is a specialist's job.

Commercial and body corporate hedges

Car-park perimeters, apartment and retirement-village boundaries, schools and rental portfolios. Scheduled visits, written quotes, work planned around residents and traffic, and invoices to the managing party. Long rural hedges and shelterbelt trimming are quoted on request.

Hedges over footpaths and driveways

Cut back to the boundary and lifted clear of the footpath so walkers, prams and sight lines at the driveway are not blocked. Owners are responsible for this. Auckland Transport's guidance is that where private vegetation obstructs a footpath or road, the owner is given a month to clear it before the work is done for them and invoiced.

Pricing

What hedge trimming costs in Auckland

A low, regularly kept hedge is usually $150–$350 to trim. A standard 1.5–3m boundary hedge is usually $300–$700, and tall or long runs from about $700 to $2,000 or more. Bringing an overgrown hedge back down typically runs $400–$1,500+ and is priced after a look. These are typical Auckland ranges including GST, not quotes; hedge removal is always quoted on site.

Hedges are priced per job rather than per metre, because a metre of waist-high buxus and a metre of 4m leylandii are completely different amounts of work. If you want to sanity-check a number, read our full hedge trimming cost guide, including a per-metre guide.

Method

How a hedge trim is done

A good trim is planned before anything is cut: the species, its health, the height and width you want, what sits underneath, and whether anything is living in it. Then the sides go first, the top last, and the site is cleaned. The order matters because it is what keeps the base wider than the top and the line straight from one end to the other.

  1. Look before cutting

Species, health, height, what is underneath, nearby power lines, and in spring and summer a check for active nests. Native birds and their nests are protected under the Wildlife Act 1953, so an occupied nest means that section waits.

  2. Set out the line

Final height and width agreed with you, a string line or fixed reference for the top, and ground sheets laid over paths, beds and paving so clippings come up in one go.

  3. Sides first, from the bottom up

Each face is cut with a slight inward slope, known as the batter, so the base stays wider than the top and the lower leaves keep getting light.

  4. Then the top

Cut level to the line. Tall tops are reached from a platform or a ladder set on firm, level ground, never by stretching off the top rung.

  5. Clean up

Clippings raked out of the hedge base, chipped or carted, paths blown or swept. Blades are cleaned after lilly pilly and other myrtles (myrtle rust) and after buxus (box blight) before they touch another hedge.

When trimming isn't the answer

Hedge removal, and grinding out the old row

Sometimes the honest advice is removal rather than another trim. A hedge that is bare and woody at the base, dying back in sections, simply too tall for the space, or a lilly pilly that keeps getting myrtle rust is often cheaper to replace than to rescue. We take the hedge out, chip the material and leave the line ready for whatever goes in next.

On lilly pilly specifically, Auckland Council's myrtle rust guidance suggests considering removing susceptible exotic myrtles such as lilly pilly and replacing them with resistant natives. That is a suggestion, not a rule, and plenty of healthy lilly pilly hedges are simply trimmed at the right time of year instead.

A removed hedge leaves a row of root plates along the line that make a new fence, garden bed or replacement hedge hard to put in. They come out the same way stumps do, with stump grinding along the row to the depth the next job needs. For a whole overgrown boundary with trees, scrub and hedging mixed together, it is usually priced as section clearing instead. Hedge removal is quoted after we have seen it.

Before you book

Hedges, neighbours and the rules

The owner of the land a hedge grows on is responsible for maintaining it. A hedge planted on the boundary line itself is generally co-owned by both neighbours, and the Fencing Act 1978 counts a live fence serving as a dividing fence as a fence, with “repair” including trimming and maintaining it. So a true boundary hedge is shared upkeep, and the Act's neighbour process can apply to it.

If the hedge is yours, its upkeep is yours, including the face on the neighbour's side. You still need their permission to go onto their property to cut it, so most people sort access out with a quick conversation before the trim is booked.

If a neighbour's hedge is too tall, blocking light or a view, talk first. As a last step, the District Court can order a tree, shrub or plant to be trimmed or removed under the Property Law Act 2007; the grounds include undue obstruction of a view from residential land and undue interference from shade or loss of light, and the order must be fair and reasonable. There is no general hedge height limit in Auckland that we are aware of; that Act is the usual remedy. More on your rights when a neighbour's tree or hedge overhangs.

Questions

Hedge trimming FAQs

How much does hedge trimming cost in Auckland?

A low hedge kept on a regular schedule usually costs $150–$350 to trim, a standard 1.5–3m boundary hedge $300–$700, and a tall or long hedge $700–$2,000 or more. An overgrown hedge being brought back down is typically $400–$1,500+. The price moves mainly with height, total length and number of faces, how overgrown it is, and how much green waste has to be chipped and carted. These are typical Auckland ranges including GST, not quotes.

How often should a hedge be trimmed?

Most Auckland hedges need two or three trims a year. Fast growers such as griselinia and photinia can need more after a warm, wet spring, while formal buxus does best with two or three light clips through the growing season. Little and often keeps a hedge dense to the ground, and several light trims usually cost less in total than one rescue job on a hedge left for years.

When should you not trim a hedge?

Avoid cutting in a heatwave or drought, when freshly exposed inner leaves scorch and a stressed plant struggles to recover. Leave any section with an active bird nest until the chicks have gone. Don't prune lilly pilly or other myrtles in spring and summer, when new growth is most exposed to myrtle rust, and don't trim buxus in wet weather because of box blight. Flowering hedges should wait until flowering has finished.

Will a hedge grow back if it's cut hard?

Usually, if it is a healthy broadleaf hedge. Griselinia, photinia and most other broadleaf hedges reshoot from older wood, and a big reduction is often staged over two seasons so the plant recovers rather than dies back. Most conifers are the exception: cypress and leylandii generally won't regrow from bare brown wood, so cutting past the green leaves a permanent gap. Those are kept in shape with regular light trims instead.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes. Removing the green waste is normally included in our quote, and we confirm it in writing. Clippings are chipped on site or loaded and carted away, and paths, lawns and beds are raked and swept. Auckland Council's household rubbish bins don't take general garden waste, so this matters. If you would like the mulch left for your garden, say so when we quote and we will leave it where you want it.

Can you trim a hedge that's on the boundary or over the footpath?

Yes. We trim boundary hedges from your side, and cut the neighbour's face too once they have agreed to give access to their property. Growth over a footpath or road is the owner's to deal with: Auckland Transport's guidance is that obstructing vegetation must be cut back by the property owner, so we trim it back to the boundary and lift it clear of the path.
