What the market gardens left behind
Before the subdivisions, this was growing country, and the evidence is still standing along a lot of boundaries. Rows of pine, poplar, gum and macrocarpa planted as shelter for market gardens and orchards now sit at the edge of new housing — oversized, structurally poor, and increasingly overlooking properties that were paddock a decade ago.
These come out as staged runs rather than one at a time, usually during development while there is still machinery access and room to work. Once houses are in and fences are up, the same belt costs considerably more to remove because everything has to be handled in smaller pieces through narrower gaps.
There is a second reason to deal with them early. Shelter trees grown in a row support each other against wind; remove some and leave others, and the remainder are suddenly exposed to loading they never grew wood to resist. Partial removal of an old belt is a common way to create a windthrow problem that did not previously exist, so it is worth planning the whole run rather than taking out the worst few and hoping.

Can you work on a site in winter?
