Protecting the trees you are keeping
Most of the damage we see on New Lynn development sites is not done by the arborist — it is done to the trees nobody intended to remove. A tree that was healthy at consent stage becomes a hazard by handover, and the cause is almost always something that happened at ground level during the build.
There are three usual mechanisms. Trenching for services severs structural roots on one side, quietly destroying the tree's anchorage. Machinery and stockpiles compact the soil over the root zone, cutting off the oxygen and water the roots need. And clearing the trees around it exposes a specimen to wind loading it never grew wood to resist. None shows symptoms immediately; all of them show up two or three years later.
The fix is cheap and it is protective fencing. Keep machinery, stockpiles and foot traffic out of the area under the canopy, plan service runs away from it, and get advice before cutting any root of significant size. If you are keeping trees on a development site, tell us at quoting stage and we will mark out what needs protecting — it costs almost nothing compared with removing a failed tree later.

How deep do stumps need to be ground for a building site?
Deeper than for a lawn. For turf, 150–300mm below grade is usually enough. For a building platform, driveway or service run, the stump and the main structural roots generally need to be fully removed rather than just ground down. Tell us what is going over the top and we will grind or excavate to suit.
Should I remove trees before or after the builders start?
Before, almost always. Once a build is underway, access narrows, materials are stockpiled where the crane or chipper needed to sit, and the same removal can cost significantly more. Clearing early also avoids trees being damaged by machinery and becoming a hazard mid-build.
