Takapuna packs a lot into small sections. Between the beach and Lake Pupuke you have original bungalows on generous sites sitting alongside apartments, townhouses and recent infill — and trees planted when the section was twice the size it is now. The typical job is a mature tree that is perfectly healthy but is now two metres from a new build, a deck or a boundary wall.
Because the drop zones are small, Takapuna removals are almost entirely sectional. We climb, cut in controlled pieces and lower everything on ropes. Where a property backs onto a reserve or the lake edge, we plan the exit route before starting so material is not being dragged back through a finished garden at the end of the day.

Salt wind, and what thirty years of it does
Salt-laden easterlies shape what fails here. Exposed trees on the seaward side carry more deadwood, more one-sided crowns and more windthrow risk than the same species two streets inland. After a decent easterly blow we see a consistent pattern of failed limbs concentrated on the coastal edge — and almost always at unions that were already weak.
The practical lesson is that deadwood is worth clearing before the season rather than after it. Removing dead limbs while a tree is standing is straightforward, planned work. Removing them after one has come through a conservatory roof is neither. On exposed Takapuna sites we would rather look at a tree in February than in July.

Lake Pupuke, the beach reserve, and who owns what
Two of Takapuna's most heavily treed areas are not private land at all. The Takapuna Beach reserve and the margins around Lake Pupuke carry substantial mature planting — much of it pōhutukawa — and it is council-managed. Requests about those trees go to Auckland Council, not to a private contractor, and no arborist should be offering to work on them.
Where it gets genuinely complicated is the boundary. A large number of Takapuna properties back directly onto reserve land, and a tree overhanging your garden may be rooted on the council side. In that situation you retain the ordinary right to trim back to your boundary line, but only if the tree is not protected — and reserve-edge pōhutukawa very often are.
The order of operations matters. Establish who owns the trunk, then check whether the tree carries a scheduling or sits within a coastal or ecological overlay, and only then decide what work is possible. Doing it the other way round is how people end up having pruned a scheduled tree. We will make those checks as part of quoting anything on a reserve boundary.

Can I remove a pōhutukawa on my Takapuna property?
Not automatically. Pōhutukawa along the Takapuna coast are often protected, either as individually scheduled notable trees or through coastal and ecological overlays. Check the property in Auckland Council's GeoMaps first. If protection applies, removal requires resource consent, usually supported by an arborist report setting out the tree's condition and the reason for removal.
