Trees planted in the 1960s and 70s on those sections — gums, pines, liquidambars, cypress and a lot of self-seeded growth along back boundaries — are now well past the size the gardens were designed around.
Good access and flat ground make Māngere efficient to work in. Where there is space, trees can often be felled whole rather than dismantled, and clean-up is quick, which keeps prices reasonable compared with the harder-access parts of the city.

Volcanic ground, and why your neighbour's stump quote differs
Māngere sits on a volcanic field, and the soil depth over rock varies far more than people expect — sometimes noticeably between two sections on the same street. Around Māngere Mountain and the surrounding cones in particular, basalt can sit close to the surface in one garden and well below working depth in the next.
That is almost entirely a stump grinding issue. A grinder can only go as deep as the ground allows, so a stump that would be taken to 400mm on deep soil might only reach 200mm where rock intervenes. It rarely matters if you are putting lawn back. It matters a great deal if you are planning to pave, lay a driveway or build over the area, because a stump left shallow under a hard surface will decay and settle.
So we assess it on site and tell you the depth we realistically expect to reach before you commit, rather than quoting a number and discovering the rock on the day. Where the required depth genuinely cannot be reached by grinding, excavation is the alternative — and it is better to know that at quoting stage than halfway through a landscaping project.
