Two kinds of tree job in one suburb

Onehunga mixes older bungalow and state-era housing with light industrial land and a steady stream of infill development. That produces two very different kinds of work: garden trees on established sections that have simply got too big, and vegetation that has to come off a site before a build, a subdivision or a new fence line goes in.

We handle both. Residential work is the usual sectional removal with a tidy finish. Development work is faster and heavier — clearing a section of self-seeded growth, privet, wattle and old shelter planting so a surveyor, a driller or a digger can get on with it without working around obstacles.

Local conditions

Rear lots, new boundaries and the trees caught between

A lot of Onehunga sections are being split. When a rear lot goes in, trees that were fine in the middle of a big back yard suddenly sit on a new boundary, over a new driveway, or exactly where the building platform needs to be. Dealing with that vegetation before earthworks start is almost always cheaper than working around it afterwards, and it avoids the machinery damage that turns a healthy tree into a hazard mid-build.

The flip side affects neighbours. If the section next door is being developed, trees on your side of the fence are about to be exposed to wind they have never carried, and the root zones near the boundary may be disturbed by trenching. Both are worth an assessment while access is still open rather than after the new build has closed the gap.

Onehunga job types

  • Development-ready clearing — we can clear a site before earthworks rather than around them.
  • Coastal pōhutukawa near the harbour edge may sit inside overlays; always worth checking first.
  • Commercial and rental work with written quotes and invoicing suited to property managers.
  • Full debris removal so a site is left workable, not covered in stacked material.

In more detail

The harbour edge, and the trees that are protected there

Onehunga runs down to the Manukau Harbour, and the foreshore streets carry mature pōhutukawa — along the Onehunga Bay reserve edge, around the foreshore restoration area, and on the coastal-facing private sections above them. This is the part of the suburb where the ordinary assumption breaks down.

Pōhutukawa on coastal sites are considerably more likely than most species to be individually scheduled as notable trees, or to sit within coastal and ecological overlays that restrict vegetation removal. A tree that has been in a family garden for fifty years can still be one that cannot legally be removed without resource consent, and unauthorised removal is an offence under the Resource Management Act with liability reaching the property owner. The schedule here is not only pōhutukawa, either: several of Onehunga's scheduled notable trees are Phoenix palms, so check before removing one of those as well.

None of that means it is impossible — it means an application rather than a booking, usually supported by an arborist report and a substantive reason such as structural failure or documented damage. We check the property before quoting anything established on the harbour side, and we will tell you plainly if the answer is no before you have spent anything.

Questions

Onehunga tree questions

Can you clear a section before building work starts in Onehunga?

Yes, that is a large part of what we do here. We can take a section from overgrown to workable — trees down, stumps ground out, material chipped and carted — so earthworks and surveying can proceed. Tell us what the site needs to be ready for and we will scope it to that.

Do I need consent to remove a pōhutukawa in Onehunga?

Quite possibly. Pōhutukawa on coastal-facing sites are more likely than most species to sit inside an overlay that restricts vegetation removal, and some are individually scheduled. Check the property in Auckland Council's GeoMaps before committing to a date, or ask us and we will check as part of quoting.

Do you work for property managers and landlords?

Yes. We quote in writing, deal directly with tenants over access and timing where you would rather not, and invoice the managing party. Repeat rental work across a portfolio is straightforward for us to schedule.
